A short series of fishy ideas – introduction

Fish market in Cardiff

I said in my first post of the year that I was looking for ways to eat more fish. Then along came Channel 4’s fascinating and shocking Fish Fight series, raising the issue of widening the repertoire of fish we eat. They’ve already had some great results for their campaign.

I struggle often to get past roasting a few salmon steaks or knocking up a quick fish pie. So it was good to see lots of good ideas in the C4 series.

We’re very lucky in Cardiff to still have an amazing fishmongers in the central market – Ashton’s has been going since 1800 – and the supermarkets seem to be raising their games with the variety of fish on offer. There’s lots more coley, MSC tuna and lots of British mackerel on offer for example. Trouble is working out what to do with them to turn them into a quick, simple and tasty tea.

I’ve already posted a few fishy favourites from my regular repertoire, but I’ve probably got another half dozen or so new ideas which I’ll share over the next couple of weeks.

Here’s some I’ve already posted:

Cod and chorizo pasta

Smoked mackerel fishcakes

Easy fish pie
