After I posted my fake rabbit meatballs I had a tweet from Barbara Kaiser introducing me their Austrian cousin fake trout – Falsche Forellen as the locals call it.
As with the rabbits, the trout in the name is merely a smokescreen – what we’re really talking about here is the long lost ancestor of the Findus Crispy Pancake. Showing my age a bit there – but you can’t beat spiced mince and onions, wrapped in a pancake, breadcrumbed and deep fried.
Start with the pancakes – Delia’s recipe never fails. Make enough for one each.
Now onto the filling. Brown a pack of beef mince. Dice an onion and fry it in with the mince before seasoning with salt, pepper and a dessertspoon of paprika. I added a splash of water at the end to bring out a little sauce.
Now fill the pancakes with the mix and secure the ends with cocktail sticks.
Make a breadcrumb batter to coat the pancakes by mixing 80g of flour and 80g of breadcrumbs with two eggs, salt and pepper and enough milk to give the consistency of very thick batter.
Carefully dip the pancakes into the batter then cook in hot oil until golden brown. Serve up with a nice big salad and a pang of 70s nostalgia.
Vielen Dank Barbara!

I used to love Findus crispy pancakes (they were no cheese hamwich mind!). Might have to give these a go to rekindle some childhood memories!
Me too – grew up on ’em. These are a bit more work…but a lot less worryingly bright orange 🙂 If you do give them a try, let me know what you think.
